At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
